How Package Tracking Works

Package tracking helps you follow a shipment as it moves from the sender to its destination. Most carriers assign a unique tracking number when a shipment is created. This number connects your package to tracking events recorded throughout the delivery network.

1. Enter Your Tracking Number

Enter the tracking number provided by the seller, online store, marketplace, or shipping carrier. Tracking numbers vary in length and format depending on the courier and shipping service.

2. Identify the Carrier

If you are unsure which company is handling your shipment, EPJourney can help identify the carrier associated with the tracking number. Some international shipments may be handled by more than one carrier during their journey.

3. Check the Latest Shipment Status

Tracking events can show when a package has been accepted, processed at a facility, departed a sorting center, arrived in the destination region, gone out for delivery, or been delivered. Updates depend on scans and information supplied by the carrier.

Understanding Common Tracking Statuses

Carrier terminology varies, but many package tracking updates describe similar stages of the delivery process. Here are some common statuses you may see:

  • Label Created: The sender has created shipping information, but the carrier may not have received the package yet.
  • Accepted or Picked Up: The carrier has received the shipment and entered it into its delivery network.
  • In Transit: The package is moving between facilities or toward the destination. It may remain in this status for several days during long-distance or international shipping.
  • Arrived at Facility: The shipment has reached a sorting or distribution facility and may be processed before continuing its journey.
  • Out for Delivery: The package has usually reached the local delivery network and is scheduled for a delivery attempt.
  • Delivered: The carrier reports that the shipment has reached its destination or another designated delivery location.
  • Exception: An unexpected event may be affecting delivery. Possible causes include weather, address problems, customs processing, transportation disruptions, or other carrier-specific issues.

Why Is My Tracking Information Not Updating?

A tracking number does not always show a new event immediately. In many cases, this does not mean that the package has stopped moving.

Tracking information may take time to appear after a shipping label is created. Packages can also travel between sorting facilities without receiving a new public tracking scan at every stage. Weekends, holidays, severe weather, customs processing, and transfers between delivery partners may also result in longer gaps between updates.

If your tracking information has not changed for an unusually long period, check the tracking number for typing errors and review the shipment directly with the carrier. If necessary, contact the seller or carrier for assistance, especially when the expected delivery date has passed.

International Package Tracking

International shipments can be more complicated to track because a package may pass through several logistics networks before reaching the recipient. The carrier that accepts a shipment in the origin country may work with a postal operator or delivery partner in the destination country.

Tracking updates may also pause while a shipment is transported between countries or processed by customs. After customs clearance, a new local tracking event may appear when the destination carrier receives or scans the package.

When tracking an international shipment, keep the original tracking number until delivery is complete. Some carriers continue using the same number throughout the journey, while others may provide an additional local reference or tracking number after a handoff.

Package Tracking Tips

  • Copy the tracking number carefully. Extra spaces or incorrect characters can prevent a tracking search from working correctly.
  • Allow time for the first update. A tracking number may be generated before the carrier physically receives the package.
  • Check the carrier when necessary. Carrier websites can provide service-specific details about delivery attempts, exceptions, and available delivery options.
  • Keep your order information. Save your order confirmation and shipping email until the package has arrived.
  • Be cautious with unexpected tracking messages. Avoid entering payment or personal information through suspicious links in unsolicited delivery texts or emails.
